Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we are asked most often about choosing and using radiators and oil coolers, and about technical datasheets.
What does a radiator do?
A radiator takes the heat a machine produces while running, carries it through a fluid and releases it to the surroundings. This keeps the engine, hydraulic system or compressor at its operating temperature and reduces the loss of efficiency and the part wear caused by overheating. Radiators are used in water, air and oil cooling applications. For a general overview, read what a radiator is and where it is used.
Why is aluminum preferred for radiators?
Aluminum is lightweight, conducts heat well, resists corrosion and is easy to shape. These properties help make coolers both efficient and durable. Safkan's compressor and oil cooler products are also made of aluminum. For details, see the article on why aluminum radiators are used; for product-specific information, simply get in touch with us.
How does an air-oil cooler work?
Hot oil passes through the cooler's coil, which has channels and fins. The integrated fan blows air across these fins, and the heat in the oil is transferred to the air. The air and the oil never mix; only heat is exchanged between them. The cooled oil then returns to the system. For a more detailed explanation, see the article on cooling in hydraulic systems and the operating principle.
Should I choose DC or AC for a fan-cooled oil cooler?
The choice depends on the power supply on your machine. DC models are offered in 12 V and 24 V and work well on mobile machines with a battery system. AC models are offered in 220 V and 380 V and suit stationary facilities with mains electricity. Every model group is available with both options. You can review the models on the fan-cooled hydraulic oil coolers page.
How do I choose the right size and cooling capacity?
The choice is generally based on the flow rate of the system, the amount of heat to be removed, the target oil temperature and the ambient conditions. A cooler that is too small cannot remove enough heat, and the available installation space also limits the size. It is best to work from the manufacturer's values. For the general approach, see choosing a radiator with advanced cooling technology; for an exact model, send us your details.
What is the difference between working pressure and test pressure?
Working pressure is the upper limit that the product may be exposed to in normal operation. Test pressure is a value higher than the working pressure, applied to verify the strength of the product, and it is not used as an operating value in the system. For example, the maximum working pressure and test pressure are stated as 15 bar and 22 bar for compressor radiators, and 15 bar and 24 bar for fan-cooled oil coolers. If your system exceeds these limits, please consult us.
Where can I get the technical datasheet (PDF)?
A PDF datasheet is available for every compressor radiator model, every forklift radiator product code and every fan-cooled oil cooler model group. You can reach the datasheets from the relevant product page. If the model you need is not on these pages, or you need technical information on another product, you can write to us through the contact page.
What information is needed for custom sizes or brand and model compatibility?
The make, model and year of manufacture of the machine are enough; if possible, also send the dimensions of the current radiator, a photo and the part number on it. The position and diameter of the connection points are important too. For screed machine and construction machinery radiators, compatibility is determined by brand, so brand and model information is essential. You can check the brand list on the construction machinery radiators page and send us your details.
How often should a radiator be maintained?
There is no fixed interval; the operating environment decides. In dusty, oily or heavily used environments, checks are needed more often. Cleaning the fins and checking for leaks, connections and the fan are generally done at regular intervals. Follow the maintenance schedule recommended by the machine manufacturer. For the inspection steps, you can use the guide on how to maintain a radiator.
How can I tell that a radiator is failing?
Common signs include overheating, coolant or oil leaks, a fluctuating temperature gauge, and clogged or damaged fins. On fan-cooled models, a fan that does not run also reduces cooling. These signs can also be caused by other faults. For a detailed list, see the article on how to recognize a radiator failure.
What information is needed to get a quote?
It depends on the product group. For a compressor, we ask for the compressor model and power; for a forklift, the make, model and transmission type; for a fan-cooled oil cooler, the flow rate, supply voltage and target temperature; for construction and screed machines, the make, model and dimensions of the current radiator. Price and lead time become clear with this information. You can send your details through the contact form.
