Fan-Cooled Oil Cooler Models

· Safkan Otomotiv

The Safkan fan-cooled oil cooler series consists of 18 model groups running from SF14-2010 to SF72-2070, and each group is offered with a DC or AC power option. In this article you will find how to read the model code, the difference between DC and AC, and the ranges published for the series.

Reading the model code

The code consists of two parts plus the supply type. In SF14-2010-DC, for example:

  • SF14-2010: Identifies the model group. The series starts with SF14-2010 and ends with SF72-2070; the codes are generally ordered from small to large.
  • DC or AC: Indicates the fan's supply type.

The exact meaning of the digits in the code and the dimensions of a model group are given in the PDF datasheet for that model group; go by this datasheet before ordering.

DC and AC: the difference and where each is used

SupplyVoltage optionsGenerally suitable for
DC12 V, 24 VBattery-powered mobile machines, construction machinery, vehicle-mounted hydraulic systems
AC220 V, 380 VFixed installations with mains power, hydraulic power units, workshop and factory machines

What decides the choice is the electrical source available where the cooler will be mounted. A mobile machine uses battery voltage (12 V or 24 V); a fixed installation suits mains voltage (220 V or 380 V). Be sure to match the voltage to the source on your machine.

On large DC models, instead of a single large fan, a double or quad arrangement of 280 mm diameter fans is used. This arrangement helps distribute air more evenly across the wide fin surface. The number and diameter of fans are given in the dimensional drawing and PDF datasheet of the relevant model.

A short worked example makes it clear how the code is used:

Written asMeaning
SF14-2010-DCSF14-2010 model group, DC fan (12 V or 24 V option)
SF14-2010-ACSame model group, AC fan (220 V or 380 V option)
SF72-2070-DCThe last model group in the series, DC fan

Having both DC and AC options in the same model group means that, with the required heat rejection staying the same, you choose only according to your electrical source. The voltage value (12 V or 24 V, 220 V or 380 V) must also be stated separately when ordering.

Value ranges of the series

  • Maximum flow rate: 40-220 L/min
  • Cooling capacity: 2500-40000 kcal/h
  • Fan diameter: 200-630 mm (280 mm x2 or x4 fans on large DC models)
  • Maximum working pressure: 15 bar; test pressure: 24 bar

These are ranges covering the whole series; for the values of a particular model group, refer to that group's PDF datasheet. The operating principle is that hot oil passes through the channel and finned coil while the integrated fan blows air across it; the air does not come into contact with the oil.

What information is needed to choose a model?

  1. The oil flow rate in the system
  2. The amount of heat to be rejected (the capacity requirement)
  3. Working pressure
  4. Electrical source: DC or AC, and which voltage
  5. The space available for mounting

When choosing capacity, look not just at model size but at the heat your machine produces. If the capacity falls too short, the oil temperature does not come down to the desired level; if it is chosen too large, space and cost increase unnecessarily. If you are unsure, sharing your flow rate, pressure and ambient temperature information is enough.
